The morning sunlight had softly made its way through the curtains, lighting the living room. I settled in with a coffee in my hand, and enjoyed the silence.
Another day was starting, and so did the old problem of work and parenting.
My laptop lay on the kitchen table, emails already arriving. Reports to write, conferences to attend — all from the warmth of our bustling family home. Working at home was supposed to be slack, an irony. No one said it wouldn’t be a constant tug-of-war between two very busy kids for my attention, though.
“Can we watch cartoons?”
I looked up at the clock and it was 8:15 am. The first video conference was due fifteen minutes later. Guilt pricked at my conscience. The pressure of having a child while also fulfilling professional commitments imposed a huge weight.
“OK,”
‘Episode one and then we’ll get on with something else.’
